The Online Poker Casino Industry in Indonesia is dominated by
the Dominobet Limited. Domobet is a well-known online casino offering over
45,000 slots worldwide and the biggest and most advanced slots software,
game-play, and service available in the market. In spite of the fact that
Dominobet Limited is one of the most recognized names in online gambling,
Domobet has been facing trouble because of the Indonesian Government's recent
action against online gambling services.
One of the reasons for this is that the recent government
announcement for shutting down the gambling industry. Domobet claims that the
closure of their business would not negatively affect them. As a result,
Dominobet's number one rival and the company with the best customer service are
now taking the lead in Indonesia. However, it seems like Dominobet Limited's
future looks bleak.
The Jakarta Post reported that Domobet's website was censored
for a while after the recent government announcement. The article read:
"Domobet's website is being filtered through internet filters on computers
used by Indonesian clients." The explanation for this action was given as:
"It is a part of the government's plan to prevent online gambling from
happening here, and to ensure the safety of gambling institutions." A few
days later, Domobet's website was back up.
According to Mr. Arthur Cheng, who heads the Cybercrime
department of the Indonesian National Police's Central CID, the blocking of
Dominobet is a direct result of the many online gambling sites that operate on
Indonesia territory. There is a strong possibility that Domobet will get
blocked soon, said Cheng. He added that the best solution for Indonesians would
be to get other online casinos and then they could still access online casinos
in Indonesia. This is not yet clear if Dominobet Limited would be able to open
its doors anytime soon.
The Tempo.com news website wrote that some citizens are
concerned that if Domobet is blocked from the Internet, players from around the
world will not be able to find an Indonesian Dominobet to play at their tables.
On the other hand, a Domobet representative stated that the new order only
applies to Domobet in Indonesia, so the majority of Dominobet users would not
be affected by this order.
Aside from the poor service and other problems Domobet has faced
in Indonesia, many Singaporean online casinos have also been affected.
Singaporean online casinos have grown rapidly since Singapore gained access to
the international banking system in the late 90s. Domobet and other online
casinos in Singapore have also experienced more players than expected. The
Singaporean government claims that this growth of the Singaporean online casino
industry is a sign of a healthy and flourishing online gambling industry in the
country.
There have been protests from residents of the neighboring
countries against Domobet in Indonesia due to the closings of internet cafes
and the cutting off of many phone lines and fax machines, also due to the
recent court decisions on citizens' rights. The Internet and Mobile Association
of Singapore (IAMAS) claimed that Domobet's recent actions have been taken
based on the government's own research. They believe that Domobet is trying to
escape being listed by the World Wide Web Consortium as an establishment that
must be accessible by users.
The IAMAS representative explained that they have requested the
Indonesian government to let them open an official website to communicate about
their demands. He stressed that the country cannot have a good Internet and
Mobile Industry without allowing good services for its citizens. As a result,
Domobet's actions must be evaluated seriously before more public pressure is
applied.
